Turkey Awaits

With domestic form steadily improving after opening day disappointment, Manchester United’s 2012/13 Champions League bid opens with a home game against old foes Galatasaray in Group H on Wednesday. The Reds have previously faced Turkish opposition 12 times in Europe’s premier club competition, with mixed results.

First up were Galatasaray in the infamous "Welcome to Hell" second-round tie in 1993. After a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford, Sir Alex’s men were knocked out on away goals following a 0-0 draw in Istanbul. The sides played out another stalemate at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium the following season, before the Reds finally recorded a win over the current Turkish champions when David Beckham scored his first senior goal in 4-0 home triumph.

Fenerbahce have also proved tough opponents, winning two of their four encounters with United. They became the first team to beat the Reds at Old Trafford in Europe in 1996, but were hammered 6-2 on their return in 2004, as 18 year old debutant Wayne Rooney hit a hat-trick.

Besiktas then snatched a 1-0 win in 2009 to end the Reds’ 24-game unbeaten home run in the competition. But Bursaspor provided no such surprise, with United claiming two comfortable victories in 2010.

999 not out

Since arriving at Old Trafford on November 6th 1986, Sir Alex Ferguson has broken record after record in a dominant managerial era.

Now the 70 year old is ready to take charge of his 1000th league game for the reds. In a phenomenal tally, Sir Alex has claimed 598 wins in his 999 league matches to date, with 233 draws and 168 defeats. That means a remarkable average of 2.03 points per game for almost 26 years. In that time, United have scored 1863 goals and conceded just 890, meaning a goal difference of 973.

Ferguson’s reign hasn’t always been so successful, however. He suffered his worst season with United in the 1989-90 campaign, where the reds slumped to 13th in the table, gaining just 1.26 points per game.

In contrast, 10 years later in the 1999-2000 season, Sir Alex experienced his most imperious league victory, as he watched his side cruise to the title with 91 points (2.39 per game), winning 28 of their 38 games and losing just 3, ratios Ferguson is yet to better.

Over the years, Sir Alex has watched his team perform many rampant displays. His biggest victory came on March 4th 1995, when new £7million signing Andy Cole hit 5 against Ipswich in a spectacular 9-0 win.

Ferguson’s biggest away win came at Nottingham Forest on 6th February 1999, after 4 late strikes from substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer steered United to a commanding 8-1 victory.
United’s most recent destruction act came in the first home game of last season, as Arsenal were hammered 8-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Wayne Rooney.

At the other end of the spectrum, United have also had their fair-share of beatings. Sir Alex’s biggest defeat as manager at the Theatre of Dreams came in October last term as arch rivals Manchester City ran riot en route to a 6-1 victory that most reds would like to quickly forget.
Sir Alex has also viewed two 5-0 away defeats in the league, to Newcastle in 1996 and to Chelsea in 1999.
Incidentally, Ferguson’s three largest defeats as United manager in the league have all come in the month of October.

Sir Alex has created a number of consistent United sides during his tenure which has led to 12 Premier League titles. Ferguson’s stars were particularly dominant in 2000 with 12 consecutive victories between March 11 and August 20. As well as winning games, United have also been hard to beat under the Scot, with two spells of 29 league games unbeaten (26/12/1998-25/09/1999 & 11/04/2010-01/02/2011).

Trip to Southampton

Southampton 1 Manchester United 2 - Barclays Premier League (Sunday 15 May 2005) Att: 32,066

The last encounter between United and Southampton was particularly memorable for the Premier League new-boys as the reds ended the Saints’ 27-year stay in the top flight of English football.

The day started brightly for Harry Redknapp’s side after John O’Shea bundled the ball into his own net with just ten minutes on the clock to give them genuine hope of a last day survival.

However, United pulled themselves level soon after when 21-year old Darren Fletcher converted O’Shea’s cross for his third goal of the campaign. Master goal scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy pounced to head home an Alan Smith cross to put United ahead just after the hour. With other results going against them, and United holding on to end a disappointing trophy-less season on a high, the Saints were relegated to the Championship.

United: Carroll, O'Shea, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre; Fortune, Fletcher, Smith, Giggs; Rooney (Saha, 74), van Nistelrooy (P Neville, 87). Subs not used: Ricardo, Kléberson, Keane. Scorers: O’Shea OG, 10; Fletcher, 19, van Nistelrooy, 63.

Southampton 0 Manchester United 1 – FA Premier League (Monday 24 August 1992) Att: 15,623

United’s first Premier League clash with Southampton will forever be in the record books as perhaps the starting point of United’s recent golden era of English top flight domination.

After two defeats and a draw to open the campaign, the reds were still awaiting their first Premier League victory and in vital need of 3 points to kick-start their season.

United were also searching for their first clean sheet of the new season, and looked more solid than in previous weeks, with the game appearing to be heading for a goalless draw. New signing Dion Dublin was making his first start for the reds after three previous substitute appearances. With full time fast approaching, Dublin claimed his first goal for United, scoring a last-minute winner to seal the first Premier League win, beginning a run of 14 games unbeaten in all competitions en route to the club’s first league title in 26 years.

United: Schmeichel, Phelan, Bruce, Pallister, Irwin; Ferguson, Ince, McClair, Giggs; Dublin, Hughes. Subs not used: Walsh, Kanchelskis, Wallace. Scorers: Dublin, 89.

Opening Day Defeat

It was a disappointing start to the season for the 19-time league winners as they succumbed to defeat at Goodison Park in a tough opening encounter.

Despite a promising debut for £12million signing Shinji Kagawa as well as an excellent display in net from David De Gea, United's stars were outplayed by a determined Everton side. In particular, 6 foot 4 inch midfielder Marouane Fellaini was a huge threat all night, with United's make-shift defence struggling to handle the Belgian international.

After a lacklustre performance from the Reds, it was inevitably Fellaini who converted a header from a corner early in the second half that sent United crashing to their first opening day defeat in 8 years.

With injuries to Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, it was left to Michael Carrick to partner returning captain Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the defence, but alongside fellow midfielder Antonio Valencia, who stepped in at right back, found life tough to restrain the power of Everton's direct football.

Upfront, with new signing Robin Van Persie sat on the bench, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck struggled to find space and create clearcut chances, with Nani having a particularly difficult evening. Even after the inclusion of Van Persie and Ashley Young, no openings were found, and other than Tom Cleverley's shot that was brilliantly cleared off the line by Phil Jagielka, the Reds failed to test the hosts' goal.

Player Ratings:

De Gea, 9, Valencia, 5, Carrick, 5, Vidic, 5, Evra, 5, Scholes, 6, Cleverley, 6 (Anderson), Nani, 3 (Young), Kagawa, 7, Rooney, 4, Welbeck, 5 (Van Persie)

Man of the Match:

David De Gea - A stunning display from the young Spaniard, with a number of sensational saves which kept the Reds in contention.

Reds Lose Out on Lucas

After a summer of intense speculation, the Lucas Moura transfer saga is finally over after the 19 year old put pen to paper on a deal taking him to big spenders Paris Saint Germain.
The French side have splashed £35million on the highly-rated Brazilian, a figure Sir Alex Ferguson described as 'ridiculous'.

United will now set their full attention on capturing Robin van Persie, although negotiations have been tough thus far, with Arsenal remaining stubborn on a £25million asking price. However, it seems the Dutchman has decided Old Trafford is his preferred move, with talks at an advanced stage despite strong interest from Juventus and Man City.

Looking to Seal the Deal

Reports suggest young Brazilian Lucas Moura may well be ready to join Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell as Sir Alex Ferguson's third signing of the summer, with speculation of an accepted bid of £26million. Rumours of the deal have spread in the past few hours, suggesting the exciting prospect may be on his way to Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, links of Robin van Persie joining United have also increased in recent days after sightings of the Dutch striker looking at houses in the Hale area. The Reds will have to fight off the challenge of Juventus and arch rivals Man City for the 28 year old's signature. He is reportedly valued at around £20million; £5million more than Sir Alex is currently willing to pay.

Brazilian Enroute to Old Trafford?

United are reportedly preparing a move for teenage wonderkid Lucas Moura. The 19 year old is expected to be worth in the region of £25-30million from Sao Paulo, with the Reds expected to offer Anderson as part of the deal. The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, has already represented his country 15 times and is tipped to have a big future ahead of him. However, United will face a battle for the Brazilian's signature, with Inter, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona all following his progress.

Out of OT

After 7 years at the Theatre of Dreams, it appears the time to move on has come for Reds favourite Park Ji-Sung. The South Korean, who has made an impressive 100 caps for his country, is expected to sign for QPR in an initial £2.5 million deal, subject to a medical.

Since arriving in 2005 for £4 million from PSV Eindhoven, Park has appeared in a red shirt 205 times, scoring 27 goals. It was in the big games that the tireless performer was most effective, and he was always one of the first names on the teamsheet against the elite opponents. Although he is most renowned for his magnificent stamina and work-rate defensively, the 31 year old also chipped in with crucial goals over the years, including vital Champions League strikes against Chelsea and Arsenal, a winner against arch rivals Liverpool and a sensational last-minute solo effort to grab all 3 points against Wolves which helped United fight off challengers Chelsea to reach Premier League victory in the 2010/11 season.

It is great testament to the player that Sir Alex Ferguson said, having left Park out of the squad for the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow, that leaving him out was one of the hardest decisions of his managerial career. The Korean leaves after gaining 11 honours at the club, including 4 Premier League crowns, 3 League Cups, a Champions League and Club World Cup title.

Elsewhere, it is reported that highly-rated left back Ezekiel Fryers will follow fellow youngsters Ravel Morrison, Paul Pogba and Oliver Norwood by rejecting a new contract offer to leave Old Trafford. The 19 year old has been linked with a move to Tottenham, and is currently out of contract and available on a free transfer (with compensation required).
Young Goalkeeper Ben Amos has also left the Reds to link up with ex-United legend Steve Bruce at Hull on loan.

Hazard Saga Nears its Conclusion

It appears Belgian star Eden Hazard has decided which club he will start next season at.

Lille's playmaker has his heart set on a move to the Barclays Premier League, with United, title winners Manchester City and European champions Chelsea vying for his signature.
The 21-year-old tweeted today: 'good afternoon guys. i made up my mind. see you later. thanks'.

However, despite rumours in the past week that he would choose Old Trafford, it seems the highly-rated youngster has settled on a move to Stamford Bridge, with betting odds slashed to 1-6 on to join Chelsea. Ex-United striker Louis Saha also tweeted suggesting Hazard was on his way to West London: '(Hazard) Apparently on his way to Chelseafc'.

An announcement on his future is expected later today.

United Get Their Man?

After the disappointment of losing out on the Premier League title to arch rivals Manchester City, it seems United have got one over the new Champions, by luring starlet Eden Hazard to the Theatre of Dreams. According to an English source, the Belgian international has been convinced by Sir Alex Ferguson to choose Old Trafford over teams like Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Should the 21 year old make a late change in a saga that has dragged for months, United have other targets lined up, such as the likes of Iker Muniain, Kwadwo Asamoah, Shinji Kagawa, Yohan Cabaye and Robin van Persie. The transfer for Hazard is estimated at forty million for a five-year contract, having rumoured to have turned down a £140,000 a week deal with City. More news will filter through over the next few hours.

Van Persie to Old Trafford?

Alex Ferguson could be ready to line up an incredible swoop for  Arsenal's goalscoring sensation Robin Van Persie.

The Dutchman is out of contract at the end of next season, and so the Gunners may be willing to cash in on the PFA Player of the Year. However, Van Persie has been linked with many clubs across Europe, including Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona, and United have added themselves to the race for his signature.

The highly demanded star has scored 30 Premier League goals in 37 games this term, and also has 12 assists to his name, displaying that Van Persie's addition to the squad would bring even more creativity and goals to United's game. The fee is not certain, but the 28 year old won't be cheap, even in the final year of his contract, with suggestions of £30million+ offers being prepared.

Title Slipping Away

After 37 games of grueling Premier League action, the season comes to its conclusion this weekend with Manchester City in the driving seat to claim victory.

After the 1-0 derby win for City followed by a vital 2-0 defeat of Newcastle, City have 2 hands on the trophy going into their final home game of the season at relegation-threatened QPR. On the other hand, United travel to Sunderland knowing City must drop points for them to have any realistic hopes of lifting their 20th league title.

However, hopes are very slim, with United's arch rivals being so strong at the Etihad all season, and QPR being so poor away from Loftus Road. It seems that the reigning Champions have thrown it away, and will have to accept defeat to their blue half of the city.

There are key moments throughout the season that have cost the Reds, none more so than the 4-4 draw against Everton, when 3 points were seemingly in the bag at 4-2 with 10 minutes to play, but with the campaign having multiple twists and turns already, maybe there is one last surprise before the season's out.

Title Decider

The anticipation is almost over, as United take on their title rivals Manchester City at Eastlands tonight, with the result surely deciding where the Premier League crown ends up.

Having let slip an 8 point lead in recent weeks, all the pressure is on the Reds to maintain their lead at the top, with a defeat allowing City to re-claim top spot on goal difference. The Blues are expected to field an attacking side, with only a win acceptable, and as a result Carlos Tevez is surely in line to start. The ex-United star has had an eventful season, but has returned to form at just the right, after his hat-trick last weekend at Norwich, and alongside fellow countryman Sergio Aguero, he will prove tough to handle.

The debate therefore lies with Sir Alex Ferguson's lineup, with much contemplation over what formation to use. Sitting back and playing for the point is a dangerous game, especially against such a strong attacking force, but over-committing upfront may leave holes in the midfield. Then there is the central midfield options at United's disposal. A game of this magnitude might be screaming out for the experience of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, or perhaps the energy of Tom Cleverley, or even the composure of Michael Carrick; another tough dilemma for Fergie.

One thing is for certain, this is a derby day not to be missed.

RDI's Predicted XI
David de Gea; Rafael, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra; Antonio Valencia, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young; Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney.

Thrown it Away?

United never like to do things the easy way, and it seems this season is no different, after the bizarre 4-4 tie with Everton on Sunday at Old Trafford.

The Champions spurned a 3-1 and then 4-2 lead, to allow the visitors a point, and bitter rivals City right back in the hunt for the title. Following the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan, United seemed to have overcome that blip with a comfortable victory over Aston Villa at the Theatre of Dreams last weekend. But the Reds were left red-faced after a late fight back from the Toffees cut United's lead at the top to three points with three games remaining.

Having not conceded at home for nearly two months, the floodgates opened at the back, and despite inventive play upfront from Rooney, Welbeck, Nani and co, the defensive side of the game cost the Red Devils the game.

A routine win for City at newly relegated Wolves set up an unbelievable Manchester Derby on Monday April 30th; a game not to be missed. With the Premier League title on the line, the two heavyweights will clash in a night that will surely decide the destination of the Premiership crown. But will the Reds be the ones who finish victorious?

Monday, 2 April 2012

Title in the Bag?

United's title hopes were given a further boost, as bitter rivals Manchester City dropped points at home to leave the Reds 2 points ahead with a game in hand.

After drawn at Stoke last week 1-1, followed by United's 1-0 victory over Fulham, The reigning champions started the weekend 3 points clear with the expectation of facing Blackburn on Monday night level on points with the Blues. However, it was another disappointing for Roberto Mancini's side as a lacklustre performance saw them drop points at home for the first time this season.

It could have been worse than just a draw for the home side, who were 3-1 down with just 5 minutes remaining, after two goals from Sebastian Larsson and one for Nicklas Bendtner put Sunderland in the driving seat. City seemed at breaking point when Mario Balotelli and Aleksandar Kolarov clashed over who to take a free kick.

Despite this, the Blues managed to pull it back, with Balotelli and Kolarov making it all square very late on. Now attention turns to Ewood Park as United take on Blackburn, with the Champions looking to make the most of their title contender's slip up with a victory, which would send them a commanding 5 points clear. To add to City's woes, they face a strong Arsenal at the Emirates next weekend, and with United at home to QPR, they could find themselves 8 points behind, with any title ambitions destroyed for another season.

Pray for Muamba

There were shocking scenes at White Hart Lane today during the FA Cup Quarter Final clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers.

After an exciting first half, with the score at 1-1 and half time approaching, distressing events occured when Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed off the ball, to the immediate worry of everyone around the ground.

Medical staff rushed to the strickened ex England Under 21 international, who had suffered a cardiac arrest. In front of 36,000 stunned fans, the 23 year old received attempts of resuscitation for around 10 minutes, before being stretchered off and rushed to hospital.

There Muamba was revived, with reports of him being in a stable condition. However, there has been recent news of the midfielder being in a critical condition, and sent to intensive care.

The incidence has put into perspective the importance of health over football, with millions across the globe coming together to support the unfortunate star.

We wish him a quick and successful recovery - pray for Muamba.

Dramatic Turn in the Title Race

After a difficult week for the Reds, after the terrible 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford to Spanish side Atletico Bilbao, the mood suddenly took a turn for the better, with a perfect weekend for United.

Wayne Rooney's brace gave United a comfortable 3 points against a very poor West Brom, who offered very little to the game and were lucky to escape with the score at just 2-0. However, the biggest cheer of the day was the news that previous leaders Manchester City had fallen behind at Swansea, and lost 1-0 in Wales, to hand the reigning Premier League champions top spot in the title race.

City were a shadow of the side that has led the pack since October, and showed signs that perhaps the pressure of a first Premier League title is too much to cope with. United, despite faultering in Europe, have looked strong in recent weeks domestically, are now surely favourites for a 20th league crown. However, the expected decider of where the trophy ends up will be the Manchester Derby at the end of April, a game not to be missed.

Young Steals the Show

Ashley Young continued his recent goalscoring form since returning from injury to steer United to victory in a tough encounter at White Hart Lane.

But 3 points seemed far from likely with Tottenham bossing the whole of the first half. Spurs thought they'd broke the deadlock when ex-Red Louis Saha's shot was blocked by Emmanuel Adebayor on the line, before the Togolese striker tapped home. However, the goal was chalked off for handball, a let off for United who were being completely dominated, particularly in midfield.

However, to everyone's surprise, it was the Champions that opened the scoring, after a dangerous corner from Ashley Young found the head of Wayne Rooney, who returned to the side after 2 games out with a throat infection to send United into the lead on the stroke of half time.

After the break it was more of the same as the home side continued to control the game. Benoit Assou-Ekotto saw his free kick hit the crossbar, and Jake Livermore's deflected strike was miraculously stopped by in-form David De Gea, who produced more heroics to keep the North Londoners at bay.

The Reds then countered, with Phil Jones' throw splitting the Spurs defence, which gave Nani the space to play a ball across the 6-yard box searching for Young at the far post. Two deflections later, and the England international found the ball in his path, and brilliantly adjusted, volleying into the bottom corner for a surprise 2 goal advantage.

It only got better, as Young again found space, this time outside the box, before curling a sensational shot round the despairing dive of Brad Friedel, putting United in complete command. Jermaine Defoe scored a late consolation for arguably the better side on the day, but United clinical finishing saw them take the 3-1 result, with Ashley Young the star; 2 goals and an assist. His return may prove to be a crucial factor in the title charge.

Giggs The Great

It was a dream day for the Welsh veteran, who celebrated his 900th game in a Red shirt with a last minute winner to claim all 3 points against an impressive Norwich at Carrow Road.
United got off to a wonder start, when Nani's cross found Paul Scholes, who rolled back the years with a perfectly timed run into the box, and headed home from 6 yards out to put the Champions a goal to the good.
Danny Welbeck then forced a smart save from Canary stopper John Ruddy, before his opposite number David De Gea continued his exceptional form with a wonderful save to prevent Pilkington from equalling the score. The young Spaniard then held Grant Holt's header from close range to keep United in front, who were also a threat, with Nani, Hernandez and Welbeck combining brilliantly upfront.

The Reds went close again, with Welbeck having an effort cleared off the line, before Giggs struck the crossbar from a pinpoint Phil Jones cross. The action continued, as Patrice Evra was lucky not to concede a penalty, after claims of a handball, before Scholes' giveaway let in Aaron Wilbraham, who's vicious strike was blocked by another superb De Gea save.

However, United's resistance was finally broken when Holt's magnificent left foot shot on the spin flew into the top corner, leaving De Gea with no chance. United fought back, with Welbeck missing a couple seemingly easy chances, both set up by the everpresent Giggs, but it looked like the chance had come and gone for United to pick up the victory. However, the script was left for Giggs, who latched onto a dangerous ball from Ashley Young, cueing wild celebrations, and making it a special day for the Old Trafford legend.

Close Call

It was a nervy night at Old Trafford as United lost 2-1 to Dutch side Ajax to limp home on aggregate 3-2.

The game started brightly for the Reds, with the tie looking dead and buried after just 5 minutes, as Javier Hernandez latched onto a fantastic through ball from Dimitar Berbatov, and the deadly finisher slotted home to make it 3-0 on aggregate, and seemingly sending United through.

However, the side from Amsterdam dominated the rest of the first half, and finally got the goal they deserved just before the break, when a weak clearance from Phil Jones fell to Aras Ozbiliz, who levelled from 20 yards to give the visitors hope.

The Reds struggled for any momentum in the second half and Ajax continued to bombard David De Gea's goal. The Spaniard was forced to make another stunning stop, one of many in recent weeks, as he saved from point-blank range from a free header by Siem De Jong, after more sloppy United defending. Ajax then set up a grand finale, after a hopeful free kick was nodded in by Alderweireld with 3 minutes of normal time to play, but it arrived too late, and United held on to scrape through to the next round, despite the very disappointing performance.

Fergie and his players will now concentrate on Sunday's game at Norwich, but also the prospect of Athletic Blibao in the next round of the Europa League. There are also concerns over the fitness of Tom Cleverley, who underwent a scan after a knock he picked up during Thursday's defeat which may see him miss out on an England debut next week.

Away Win in Amsterdam

United showed their class in their first Europa League appearance by claiming a 2-0 win at Ajax to put themselves in the driving seat ahead of the home leg next week.

However, it didn't all go Fergie's men's way, as they struggled to get into their stride in the first half. Creating very little, it was a lacklustre start, with David De Gea pulling off yet another magnificent save, this time to prevent De Jong from opening the scoring for the Dutch champions.

After the break, it was a different story, however, as the Reds stepped up a few gears. With the passing more fluid and gaps starting to appear, it led to a Nani pull back being dispached by Ashley Young. United continued to threaten, with Nani having a strike saved, and it was inevitable that there would be a second goal for the Devils.

And it was Javier Hernandez to open up the Ajax defence, after a good move between the Mexican, Wayne Rooney, and firstly Antonio Valencia - who was injured in the process and replaced immediately afterwards - before Rooney slotted Hernandez in to settle the game and potentially the tie, with 2 away goals to take to Old Trafford.

It was also a successful night as a result of the return of a couple of notable injury return as Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley and Nani slotted back into the starting eleven after recent absences, with Cleverley completing 60 minutes after 4 months out being the most important return to improve the depth of the midfield. slotted back

Controversial Encounter

Today's heavyweight clash between United and Liverpool saw the first meeting between Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez since the racism row.

Tensions were bound to be close to their peak, but were spiced up even further as the Uruguayan ignored the hand of Evra in the pre-match hand-shakes, followed by Rio Ferdinand and Danny Welbeck failing to offer the gesture.

The first half was fiery, with crunching tackles all over the pitch, but lacked quality to open the scoring. The clear chance of the half came for Paul Scholes, who was dominating the midfield as usual. A fantastic move of one-touch football led to Ryan Giggs playing a perfect cross onto the head of Scholes, but the master could only divert it straight at Liverpool stopper Pepe Reina.

Suarez thought his chance had come, when he took the ball beyond Evra for a 1 on 1 chance with David De Gea. However, he was stopped in his tracks by a sensational committed challenge by Ferdinand, who had to get the tackle spot on, otherwise he would've faced an early bath.

Sparks flew in the tunnel at the break, and it was United who composed themselves for the second half, as Wayne Rooney scored twice in the opening 5 minutes to set the Reds on course for 3 points. Fergie's men controlled the tempo throughout, with Scholes at the heart of everything.

However, with 10 minutes to go, the inevitable happened, with enemy Suarez scrappily bundled the ball over the line to get the Merseysiders back in with a chance. The United box was bombarded with long balls, but the defence held out with some strong defending, as well as Dea Gea pulling off another wonderful save, similar to last week, to prevent Glen Johnson getting a late equaliser, and the Red Devils took the 2-1 victory to go top of the Premier League by a point.

The main talking point, however, will be the controversy surrounding the Suarez/Evra incidents. Following the final whistle, the United captain celebrated in front of Suarez, which caused yet another another scrap down the tunnel. Unfortuantely, it seems the unsavioury incidents will almost certainly over-shadow the impressive performance and victory for the Champions.

Comeback Kings

It was an eventual day at Stamford Bridge as the Reds searched for 3 points to go back to level on points at the top with arch rivals Manchester City.

They began the game brightly, creating a number of great opportunities, and two big shouts for a penalty, which were both dismissed by Howard Webb. After escaping those scares, Chelsea went up the other end and scored completely against the run of play when Daniel Sturridge's cross was diverted in by United defender Jonny Evans.

The second half started disastrously, when Juan Mata scored a stunning volley just after the restart, which was soon followed by a David Luiz free header to put Chelsea seemingly out of sight at 3-0.

But the Reds showed the Champions' spirit once again, and battled back, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice, both from the spot after a couple of dubious decisions from referee Webb, who was having a shocker. The Chelsea area was bombarded with wave after wave of United dominance until finally they cracked, and Javier Hernandez converted Ryan Giggs' pinpoint cross to complete the unbelievable comeback and snatch a point for the 19-time English champions.

David De Gea then silenced some of his critics with a wonderful save to prevent Juan Mata grabbing a last minute winner for the Blues, and then made another fantastic finger-tip stop at the expense of debutant Gary Cahill to keep the score tied and send United 2 points behind City.

There was another mportant comeback of note, with the return of Ashley Young to the starting line-up after a couple of months out with injury. Yet good more news for Sir Alex Ferguson is the rumours that Tom Cleverley could be in line for a place in the squad for Saturday's mighty clash with Liverpool to help bolster the midfield.

No Cup Glory

It was a disappointing trip to Anfield for the Red Devils as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Despite dominating possession for most of the game, United failed to create enough chances, and were caught out as a result as a late Dirk Kuyt strike sent Fergie's men out. Things could've been different if Antonio Valencia's surging run had've resulted in an early lead for the Premier League Champions, but the flying Ecuadorian saw his effort hit the post.

However, after that great opportunity passed, the Merseysiders exposed the weaknesses of David De Gea at claiming crosses, as Daniel Agger headed home a Steven Gerrard corner, with the young keeper in no man's land.

United were back on level terms before the break, after good work from Valencia set Rafael bursting down the right side, who played a pinpoint ball across to Park, who slotted into the back of the net.

Momentum was firmly with the Manchester side, but they provided no real threat to Pepe Reina's goal, and they were to pay in the dying moments as a mistake from Patrice Evra allowed Dirk Kuyt to hit the winner.

It was a tough day for Evra, after the Luis Suarez racism saga. The Frenchman was booed throughout by the home fans, and was at fault for the winner, meaning it was a day to forget for the stand-in captain.

The reds would have faced a fifth round home tie against Brighton and Hove Albion had they prevailed. The two sides meet again in the league at Old Trafford in two weeks time.

Legend Returns

Fergie's men continued their excellent form from last weekend's fantastic 3-2 win at the Etihad stadium with a comfortable performance against Bolton, ending with a 3-0 victory to take the Reds level on top alongside Manchester City, who play against Wigan on Monday.

Despite the the scoreline being a formality in the end, United had a frustrating first half, with Wayne Rooney missing a penalty, smartly saved by Bolton keeper Bogdan, who refused to give up a clean sheet without a fight, thwarting the Reds' attacks on mutliple occasions.

But just before the break, it was the perfect scenario, as returning Paul Scholes, making his first Premier League appearance since coming out of retirement, smashed home a Rooney cut back to send the Old Trafford faithful wild. The midfield genius had a magnificent game, dominating the midfield, and minus a couple of mis-placed passes and a couple of typical fiery challenges, was almost flawless in his 70 minute cameo.

The second half saw Bolton open up in defence, and the Reds took full advantage, with Rooney sliding Danny Welbeck in for a well deserved goal. However, the tireless striker was injured in the process and replaced straight after giving United the 2-0 lead.

The players continued to attack without success, until Michael Carrick completed the scoring to secure an easy three points for the Champions.

The day, however, belongs to Scholes, who's retirement had caused much debate as to who would replace him. Instead of spending money, Sir Alex decided to end the speculation by bringing the 37 year old back until the end of the season. One player that might've been in with a chance of taking over was Darron Gibson, but he has now left to Everton on a four and a half year deal for a reported £1.5million, as a result of failing to catch the eye when given the opportunity.

Derby Day

Following two poor defeats at the hands of Blackburn and Newcastle, the Reds would love nothing more than an easy win to get them back on track.

However, instead of a lower league cup tie to get back to winning ways for a stuttering United side, they are facing a massive clash against Premier League and local rivals Man City in the FA Cup third round. Not exactly the easy game they wanted, but a win would give the Champions a major psychological boost for the remainder of the campaign.

But a win at the Etihad stadium seems far from likely after the dire performances of the last week. First of all, a shocking home defeat to bottom of the league Blackburn, followed by a pounding from Newcastle, on both occasions conceding 3 to highlight the leaky defence of early season is back.

There were also troubles off the pitch, with Wayne Rooney fined and dropped, missing the Blackburn defeat as a result of a night out on Boxing Day. There have also been reports that Rooney is on his way out of Old Trafford, which would be a major blow for a United side already struggling for creativity.

Elsewhere, Federico Macheda has joined QPR on loan for the rest of the season, with Mame Biram Diouf expected to follow the Italian out of the Theatre of Dreams for a loan spell to gain some experience.
Tom Cleverley should be back in action soon which will help improve recent displays, along with any other potentials signings if Fergie decides to add to the squad.

It's tough to see the Reds beating City, however, as their home record is outstanding and United out of sorts, but with both sides having numerous players missing, the result is not easy to predict.
