Tonight's Carling Cup 4th round clash saw United recover from their weekend mauling with a comfortable win at the expense of League Two outfit Aldershot.
In a revamped side, the Reds strolled to victory with little worries. Dimitar Berbatov notched his first goal of the season with a tidy finish from Ji-Sung Park's pass to put the Reds 1-0 up after a quarter of an hour. From then the win was never in doubt, with Michael Owen bagging his customary goal before half-time. It was more of the same after the break with Antonio Valencia's fearsome strike from 25 yards out finding the back of the net making it 3-0 and game over.
Aldershot had their moments in the second half with flashes of a threat, with winger Jermaine McGlashan showing a lot of pace and trickery, and Luke Guttridge going close with a couple of long-range efforts. But United remained solid at the back, helped with the return of captain Nemanja Vidic and impressive youngster Ezekiel Fryers. The gulf in class was evident to see, but Dean Holdsworth's side put up a valiant display and were no disgrace.
Berbatov was lively all night and at the heart of much of United's good work to stake a claim for a starting place at Everton at the weekend. Tom Cleverley was also sharp, showing some neat touches and link-up play before being taken off, gaining an hour of football on his return from injury. Reds fans also saw a first glimpse at Ravel Morrison in first team action, and he quickly settled in, always wanting the ball and showing dazzling feet and pace. Definitely one to watch for the future.
So United are safely through to the 5th round of the Carling Cup. Their minds now turn to Premier League action again as Fergie's men look to gain 3 points, and put the 6-1 hammering to bed.

If the humiliation of the Manchester Derby wasn't enough already, United now have a trip to League Two side Aldershot looking to prevent another embarrassing defeat.

Hernandez Pens New Deal
The revelation of last season, Javier Hernandez, has pledged his future to Old Trafford, bringing some positive news to the Theatre of Dreams after yesterday's lows.
The Mexican signed for just £6 million last summer, before having a stunning debut season, scoring 20 goals, making him one of the hottest prospects in world football. He capped his wonderful breakthrough year with the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, voted by the fans. Chicharito has gone from strength to strength since Sir Alex Ferguson's masterstroke signing, with success for both club and country. In the CONCACAF Gold Cup, he was top scorer with 7 goals for Mexico, including a hat-trick against El Salvador, and was named most valuable player of the tournament.

Derby Day Disaster
Old Trafford was the scene of one of the biggest shocks in Premier League history, as the Champions were thrashed at home to see their 37-game unbeaten run at the Theatre of Dreams come to end at the hands of their fiercest rivals Manchester City.
It was sheer humiliation for the Reds as they were destroyed by a rampant City, with the nightmare finally ending at 6-1. Despite the heavy defeat, however, it was United who started the brighter of the two sides, as they dominated possession early on, with Ashley Young particularly lively on the left flank. But the Devils were unable to split the Blues' defence open, despite spending most of the first ten or fifteen minutes in and around the City box. It was clear from the off that City had a gameplan to target the United wingers Young and Nani, with Young especially, being fouled on numerous occasions by Richards and Barry.
City rarely threatened until a brisk counter-attack saw Balotelli slot the ball into the bottom corner, despite a despairing dive from de Gea, to see City take an undeserved one goal lead. However, after that goal completely against the run of play, United's heads dropped, and it was the Blues who took over the domination of possession, but similar to the home side, failed to capitalise as it remained 1-0 at the break.
Half time brought an opportunity for Sir Alex Ferguson to lift his lacklustre side, and the performance was crying out for changes, with Nani a spectator and Anderson having a poor display in midfield. However, the manager stuck with the starting XI, and it was more of the same, as City started the second half on the front foot. United's misery continued when Evans was sent off for hauling Balotelli to the ground, preventing a goalscoring opportunity. Even then, his side a goal down, and now a man down, Ferguson persisted with the current crop of players, and moved Fletcher to right back, with Rooney dropping into midfield. But City were ruthless after the sending off, with another goal for Balotelli, and one for Aguero to effectively end any faint United hopes of a revival.
There was something to cheer about for The Old Trafford faithful, however, as Fletcher, back in his favoured midfield role with the introduction of Phil Jones, scored with a fantastic long range effort to give a slight glimmer of hope. But the hope was short-lived as City ran riot in the final few minutes of the game. Edin Dzeko had a major impact in the twenty minutes he was on the pitch, scoring two and setting up one for David Silva, who returned the favour for Dzeko's second, as the Blue half of Manchester were in Dreamland at 6-1.
There is no doubting that the sending off made a massive difference to what followed, but even at 11-a-side, City were more clinical, and seemed to want it more. In a game of few positives, the performance of Ashley Young was pleasing for a United perspective, as he always looked a threat cutting in from the left, and Darren Fletcher looked more like his old self. However, players such as Nani, Anderson and Evans need much improvements on their showings today, as well as the previously reliable veterans Ferdinand and Evra, who were part of a non-existent defence in the second half. One thing's for certain, massive improvements are needed if United are to bounce back from this pounding, with a tough trip to Everton next weekend. Manchester City have put down a marker, they are ready this year to challenge the Reds for the title, now United have to prove the city, and title is theirs.

Nemanja's Nightmare
Nemanja Vidic saw his long-awaited return cut short after a dubious sending off in Bucharest as United limped home to a 2-0 victory over Romanian Champions Otelul Galati.
In a lacklustre performance from the Reds, inevitably it was Wayne Rooney who provided the get out of jail card with two second-half conversions from the spot to spare them from embarrassment. United were troubled throughout the night, in particular at 1-0, but Galati lacked the quality and cutting-edge to create any clear-cut chances of note. The Reds were restricted to very few openings in the first half, despite the best efforts of Rooney, Nani, Hernandez and co up front. At the back, Anders Lindegaard had a few worrying moments, but was never really tested by the home side.
Carrick, Nani and Rooney all squandered decent opportunities, as frustration increased. Then on the hour mark, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side’s patience finally paid off when Galati captain Costin handled in the box to concede a penalty. The outcome of the resulting spot-kick was never in doubt as Rooney sent the keeper the wrong way to put the English Champions a goal to the good. However, from relief and joy, quickly there was a moment of despair as Vidic for a challenge debatably worth a yellow, was given his marching orders to end his first game since the opening day of the season, to the disbelief of everyone.
United were rocked for a 10 or 15 minute period after that, but the Romanians failed to capitalise on their man advantage, until centre back Milan Perendija was shown a second yellow to even the playing fields once again. Rooney then slotted home his second penalty of the night to complete the victory, and end any nerves or doubts in stoppage time, to leave the final score; United 2-0 Galati. Overall, a tougher than expected warm-up before the Manchester Derby for Fergie’s men, who had to dig in deep and fight to the end to struggle to three hard-earned points, and move them up into second in the group, two points behind Benfica. The Reds will have to be much improved if they are to beat the 'noisy neighbours' on Sunday.

The Reds in Romania
After their 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday, Man United are back in action tonight with a trip to little known Otelul Galati in Matchday 3 of the Champions League. The Romanian Champions have had a slow start to this campaign, and are sitting in 9th after ten games in the division. Taking this into account, as well as the fact United lie third in the group and playing catch-up, behind Benfica and Basel, it seems an impossibility that the Reds won't come away from tonight's game with less than 3 points.
With Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Javier Hernandez all expected to return to the starting XI this evening, United have brought a strong side, with Sir Alex Ferguson under no illusions on the difficulty of the challenge tonight in a hostile environment.
The game will not be held at the shock first-time Romanian championship league winners' home, as it fails to meet UEFA standards, and is instead taking place at Bucharest's National Stadium.

United's Latest Devils
Sir Alex Ferguson has in the past made a number of exceptional acquisitions to steer the Reds to glory. And now it seems he's found a few more stars with his latest signings; Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea.
United seemed slow, tired, dejected and in need of new blood after their Champions league defeat to Barcelona, and it seems the fresh faces have done the trick. This season has seen a rejuvenated United start with a bang. The Reds have used a free-flowing, attacking approach which has seen them score 34 goals in all competitions already this campaign, with the new boys all helping United to an unbeaten start.
Ashley Young was instrumental in United's destruction of Arsenal early this season, with two goals and three assists leading to him to being named Man of the Match, and Young has slotted in like he's been at the club for years. His pace and delivery have made him a fans' favourite already, and there's plenty more to come from the England international, who will be an important part of England's Euro 2012 search for victory.
Phil Jones is another player who has settled in to life at the Theatre of Dreams impeccably. He has gained rave reviews for his combative nature, leadership qualities and versatility. He has all the attributes to be a regular at Old Trafford for many years, with a number naming him as a potential England captain for the future. Jones has impressed in a range of positions already in his short United career, mostly in defence at either right or centre back, but he starred in central midfield on saturday in the 1-1 draw at Anfield. His robust performances have seen an England senior call-up, and is set for a strong debut season for the Reds. He seems a snatch at just £16 million for one of England's brightest stars, as Fergie saw off competition from Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, to name a few, to get his signature.
As well as young English talent, Sir Alex also looked abroad for his dealings this summer. With the departure of Edwin Van der Sar, who retired at the end of last season, there was a massive hole to fill in between the posts. David de Gea was the man Ferguson put his faith in, and he became the Reds' new number 1 for £18.3 million. Early season blunders created much criticism, but he has answered those who doubted him with some stunning displays to prove he is worthy of wearing the United shirt. His distribution is second to none, and at only 20, he could potentially be at Old Trafford for the next twenty years. The Spaniard's recent performances have shown he is capable of fulfilling his price tag, and once he learns the language and is fully settled in the country, he will surely become one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the world.
So it seems Sir Alex has done it again. He has created yet another squad filled with young quality, and this team is set for more Premier League titles, as well as challenging Barcelona for European glory. Only time will tell if they are good enough yet to push the Spanish giants off their throne, but the Reds are most definitely an improving force.
